Sir Cuthbert Sidney Wallace trained at St Thomas’ Hospital and was elected at resident assistant surgeon to the hospital in 1897. He held several positions and was revered for leading new methods in the theatres. He served in the Second Boer War and First World Wars. In the First World War he served as a Consulting Surgeon to the British Army, being promoted to Major-General in 1917. His experience influenced his work, as a protagonist of the forward operating centre, especially for abdominal injuring – a development which saved many lives in Second World War. After the war he returned to St Thomas’ to serve as senior surgeon, and he was director of the surgery for several years. He was elected Consultant Surgeon and Dean of the Medical School.
He was created a Baronet in 1937.
This painting may have been painted to mark the retirement of Sir Cuthbert Wallace in 1930. He is shown seated and wearing a bow tie, behind his appears part of a large landscape painting. There is a copy of this portrait by Alfred Egerton Cooper at the Hunterian, Royal College of Surgeons of England.
