The Royds were a very wealthy family who had long connections with Rochdale and its industries. Settling here from Halifax around 1706, they initially made their fortune in the wool trade. Many in the family were wool clothiers while others were merchants but as demand grew they eventually expanded their business to include cotton goods. In 1819, Clement Royds Senior (Clement Molyneux's grandfather), used the wealth the family had made in the textile industry to found a successful banking business, Clement Royds & Co.
