Astley Paston Cooper was one of the best-known surgeons of his generation. He was the son of a clergyman. He trained in London under Henry Cline and in 1800 was appointed surgeon to Guy’s Hospital. He was president of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1827 and 1836 and was elected vice-president of the Royal Society in 1830. He treated George IV and received a baronetcy for his successful treatment and was also surgeon to George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria.
