Sir Arthur Jared Palmer Howard was Chairman of the Board of Governors of St Thomas' Hospital from 1943–1964. He was treated by the St Thomas' surgeon James Wyatt and nurses after being severely wounded in the First World War, and as a result was a life-long supporter of the Hospital. He founded the Perseverance Trust which ran a home for retired nurses and now promotes the study and practice of nursing. In addition, he was a Conservative MP (1945–1950) and Mayor of Westminster (1936). He is depicted seated, three-quarter length, wearing a grey pinstriped suit. This is probably the portrait painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1966 (582).
