Sir Arnold Bax (1883–1953) when elderly is depicted in this painting by his friend John Napper. Head and shoulders, facing forward and looking down and to the right, the sitter has silver hair and eyebrows and is wearing a blue shirt, dark tie and brown coat. A drawn study for the painting is also in the collection. A composer, Bax was a former student of the Royal Academy of Music, and Master of the King's, and then the Queen's Music, from 1942–1953.
