Bough is one of Carlisle's most important nineteenth-century artists. He painted very few portraits in his career and this painting is the only known self portrait painted in about 1866. It shows him with his favourite white bulldog, Madame Sacchi, named after the celebrated dancer. He was a great dog lover and they feature in many of his paintings. It is a rather still, formal portrait and uncharacteristic of Bough. It might have been painted from a 'carte de visite' photograph of him by another artist.
