In the run-up to the centenary of the outbreak of the Second World War, the Parish Council commissioned a life-sized artwork of a soldier. The community pledged to honour each of the 48 men from the village killed in action in several ways. Villagers were urged to 'adopt a soldier' for whom they would observe a minute's silence on the exact centenary of his death. The local 'Knit and Knatter' crafts group made medals which were placed on the soldier on the appropriate date. The local vicar, Reverend Paul Peverell, held a remembrance service, at which a short presentation would be made about the soldier with the local history society undertaking the necessary research. The statue is mounted on an irregular-shaped slab, similar to that on which the statue of James Cook as a boy, which stands opposite.
