The simplified form and angular moulding of this seated female figure is typical of Wyndham Lewis’s output and demonstrates his brilliance as a draughtsman. Lewis had seen active service during the First World War and during the early 1920s he returned to more classical subject matter and produced a series of nudes and portraits. This work previously belonged to the prominent New York politician and renowned philanthropist, Carter Burden, who was an avid art collector and owned drawings by Sargent, Picasso and Matisse.
