A sketch from the 'Ravenspoint' showing the effect of waves on a calm sea. From a low viewpoint Everett has shown a trough of a wave diagonally across the lower half of the painting. The artist has concentrated on the means of demonstrating the form of the waves looking towards an empty horizon. He has used darker short brushstrokes for the underside of the waves and thicker white impasto for the crests and to indicate foam. The patterning of the foam is clearly shown on the left. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Ravenspoint', from Liverpool to the Mediterranean between January and February 1935. The painting is inscribed 'Ravenspoint' verso.
