A free-standing neo-gothic tower, the Scott Monument functions primarily as an enclosure for John Steell’s colossal marble statue of the writer Sir Walter Scott. Alexander Handyside Ritchie was the sculptor for Prince Charles Edward Stuart; Peter Slater the sculptor for George Heriot; Andrew Currie the sculptor for Edie Ochiltree; John Rhind the sculptor for Ivanhoe; Thomas Stuart Burnett the sculptor for Effie Deans.
