Landscape scene with figures depicting a scene at Scheveningen, which is a fishing port on the Dutch coast, north of the Hague. The figures are represented engaging in a number of activities; fishing boats land their catch to the left to be taken to the market by horse drawn wagons seen in the centre of the painting, various people mill about aiding the process. There is a hillock to the right with a single, solitary building on top. The shore scene combining figures, seascape, architecture and landscape which became a signature style for the artist. There is a dramatic clouded sky overhead, casting a large shadow across the foreground of the picture, enveloping a group of figures in shade.
