This is one of a pair that stood either side of the entrance to the Samson & Hercules House on Tombland, Norwich. The figure was originally finely carved in oak, and fully or partially gilded however this detail is not visible through the many subsequent layers of paint with which he has been covered over the years, this has resulted in a slightly bulbous appearance, the final layer of paint is white. The figure is standing holding a small fox in his left hand and a jawbone of an ass in his right held up to his shoulder, he has a moustache and long flowing hair. This figure is thought to date from as early as 1657, although further research may reveal that he may be of an earlier date.
