The life-sized figure stands in the middle of a raised flowerbed in the centre of an inner courtyard of Bristol Eye Hospital. The woman looks skyward, her arms are raised and her hands shield her eyes. She wears an ankle-length dress and boots and stares at the bird suspended on wires from the surrounding buildings, approximately 15 metres above the ground. The wings are fully extended and it is loosely based on an Arctic tern.

inscription on a bronze plaque on the wall of the reception area: ST ODELIA, THE PATRON SAINT OF EYESIGHT LIVED / IN THE 9TH CENTURY: BLIND AT BIRTH SHE WAS / CAST OUT BY HER FAMILY AND ADOPTED BY NUNS. / AT THE CONVENT SHE / MIRACULOUSLY / REGAINED HER SIGHT AND LATER BECAME THE / ABBESS. THE SCULPTURE SHOWS HER SEEING / A BIRD FLYING OVERHEAD AT THE MOMENT IN / WHICH HER SIGHT RETURNS. / THIS STATUE WAS FUNDED BY THE TRUSTEES / FOR THE UNITED BRISTOL HOSPITALS AND / CREATED BY STEVE JOYCE IN 1985
