The two panels that form this diptych probably originally formed the inner sections of the wings of a small triptych, which may have adorned the altar of a chapel, perhaps in a private residence. These images would have been concealed when the triptych was closed. The unknown donor, a middle-aged cleric, kneels in honour of the holy figures represented in the missing central panel, possibly the Virgin and Child. The saints represented, Saint Andrew and Saint James, would have had some special significance to the donor. They could have been his personal name-saints or were perhaps the patron saints of his church.
