'The Sailor' stands on guard, his costume dates from the Boer War (1899–1901). He is dressed in field service order and carries the remains of a Lee-Enfield rifle Mark 1. 'The Sailor' was originally created as part of a monument erected in Duncombe Place, York, for the South African War (1899–1902) which incorporated sculptural figures representing all branches of the services. The sailor figure was thought inappropriate and replaced by an unarmed one. The original sailor figure was given to the city of Lichfield by the sculptor.
