This painting depicts 'Royal Consort' flying the house colours of the North Lancashire Steam Navigation Company. 'Royal Consort' was a paddle steamer built in Glasgow in 1844, possibly by Tod and Macgregor. She was described in the 1850 register as having a length of 178 feet with deck and quarterdeck and three masts. Later registration alterations show the length as 215 feet, a gross tonnage of 796 tons and a reduction to two masts. 'Royal Consort' was owned in 1847 by Frederick Kemp, founder of the North Lancashire Steam Navigation Company and Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood's Steward and Land Manager, but she was mortgaged to the Manchester Bank. She was later sold to Preston and Wyre Railways (later the Joint Railways), and scrapped in 1890.
