This painting belongs to the period in the 1980s when the artist was concentrating on more abstract compositions. From the early 1990s he has returned to a representational style of painting with more emphasis on the figure. The artist has confirmed that the title 'Valley Ranger' refers to Ashvale Place, a street in Aberdeen. In the 1940s, because of the large number of children living there it was called the valley of children and individuals were called valley rangers.
