Robert the Bruce had a strong connection with Aberdeen, giving six different charters to the city over his lifetime. The statue depicts the Bruce on horseback, holding in his left hand the charter which he granted in 1319 giving the Royal Burgh of Aberdeen feudal rights over the Forest of Stocket, which is still in the possession of the city. This charter also resulted in the creation of the city's Common Good Fund which is still in use today. The artwork depicts the Scottish king as a warrior with sword, chain armour and crown. The monument, voted for by the people of Aberdeen, stands outside the revamped Marischal College, the City Council’s new headquarters.
