This copy came into possession of John Gibson's family through marriage. A letter to Mrs Hughes from Robert Southey, ' Keswick, Jan 27 1827, When next I may be in town I am to sit to your friend Sir Thomas Lawrence for Mr Peel. I have been made by different artists to look like a Methodist preacher, like an assassin, like a fop, like a fool, like a prig, like a sensualist, like a Jew who sells oranges, and like a felon on his trial for uttering false notes. What will Sir Thomas make me look like? God bless you, R. S.' Some time in the summer of 1828 he sat to Sir Thomas Lawrence for Sir Robert Peel and also to Sir Francis Chantrey for a bust. His son Cuthbert writes 'The former of these was on the whole the most successful likeness of my father taken in his life.
