A male standing figure wearing high-collared cloak, with left arm flexed, hand clenched and index finger touching the lapel of the cloak. The right arm is outstretched as if to protect child kneeling on right-hand side. The child is looking up at Owen. A memorial was considered by Owen's followers soon after his death and a fund was set up. However, the preferred location of Newtown was opposed by the town fathers on account of Owen's atheism. It was not until 1950 that a committee was formed in Newtown to erect a statue. In March 1951 Gilbert Bayes was commissioned for the work. The committee persuaded the Co-operative Union to back the project and by October 1954 sufficient funds had been raised to commission work on the statue which was completed by January 1956.
Born in Newtown, Owen was a social reformer and philanthropist. In 1995 a replica statue was erected outside the Co-operative Bank’s headquarters in Manchester.
