Robert Grey was elected a Governor of the Foundling Hospital in 1878. He subsequently served as Treasurer of the Hospital between 1892 and 1914. He was a senior partner in the firm Henry Grey Junior and a prominent London Freemason. He instigated annual trips to the seaside for the Foundling children and provided the impetus for the building of a separate infirmary building for the Hospital. His daughter Beatrice and his son in law Patrick also became Hospital Governors.

William Carter was best known for painting portraits, animals and still lifes. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Carter (1835–1892) and brother of the Egyptologist Howard Carter. He lived mostly at Swaffham in Norfolk, but also in London where he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.
