West Drayton is an ancient parish on the Middlesex border with Buckinghamshire. It is recorded as Draitone in the 1086 Domesday Book, and as Westdrayton in 1465. The artist James Dudley Haynes was born in West Drayton. As a baby he suffered severe spinal injuries. He was self taught and painted the West Drayton of the 1920s and 1930s. He exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1936 he moved to Framlingham, Suffolk, to teach art, where he died.
