By the time he was twenty-eight Alexander owned the farms of Prestoun, Torrery, Airdrey, Ladylands, Wreaths, Nunbelly and Cow Corse in the parish of Kirkbean. When his father died in 1819 he inherited the property of Auchincruive in Ayrshire, and became MP for the area for a short while. In 1793 he married Louisa (Lucy), daughter of Wynne Johnston of Hilton, Berwickshire. Robert Burns admired Lucy Oswald, and after originally writing ‘O What Ye Wha’s in Yon Toun’ for Jean Lorimer he changed the name to Lucy and sent the poem to her in 1795. Lucy and Richard had two children, Richard and Mary, but Lucy died of consumption in Lisbon in 1797. In 1817 Richard married Lady Lilias Macqueen, daughter of Hugh, 12th Earl of Elington. Richard died, aged 70, in 1841.
