This painting is a portrait, by James Cranke the elder, of his son, John. Reverend John Cranke was born in 1745 and died in 1816. He was the eldest child of the artist. A distinguished scholar and clergyman, he served for a time as Dean of Trinity College, Cambridge, before settling as incumbent of the Parish of Gainford in County Durham. As well as this portrait, the Dock Museum owns two other paintings by the artist: 'William Cranke as a Boy' and 'Self Portrait'. This portrait was painted in 1751 which would make John Cranke six years old, just at the point at which boys were 'breeched' and dressed in trousers. It should be seen as a companion piece to 'William Cranke as a Boy' as the subjects are brothers and both were painted by their father.
