John Hoskin's Resurgence was the winning entry in a 1967 competition to design a large-scale metal sculpture for Darlington's new Town Hall. Organised by the Lions Club, the project's purpose was to provide the town with a distinctive modern work of art to symbolise Darlington's recovery from the threat of industrial decline. It was also the commissioners' intention that the competition should provoke discussion about art in the locality, and promote art practice in the north of England. The sculpture is formed of two diagonal rectilinear sheets of steel, bolted to two horizontal sheets. These sheets of steel are supported by a central column of four blue-painted beams. In 2015 the Town Hall forecourt was remodelled to create space for space a 75 metre long lay-by with two bus stops and extra lighting.
