Gothic panels containing twenty-one life-size figures almost in the round. They represent early English writers from Bede to Chaucer, together with some of the characters they created. They are contained in three segmental-arched recesses set above the oriel windows of the first floor. Each figure was identified by the sculptor. The panel on the right contains Chaucer, at the centre, and pilgrims from 'The Canterbury Tales'. The three characters to Chaucer’s right are the Miller, the Merchant and the Wife of Bath; to his left are the Prioress, the Knight and the Man of Law.The central panel has the Venerable Bede surrounded by other English writers. Saint Aidan, Saint Chad, and Saint Augustine are to Bede’s right and Saint Cuthbert, Saint Paulinus and Caedmon, the earliest poet whose name has survived, are to his left.
