Peter Scott was a pioneering conservationist and ornithologist, who was knighted in 1973 for his services to conservation. He was Nature in Art’s first president and is one of the UK’s best known wildlife artists. This painting was used by Shell in its 'Guide to Britain'. Peter Scott was also an author, naturalist, sailor, scuba diver and gliding champion. He trained as a biologist at Cambridge and then as a painter at Munich State Academy and the Royal Academy schools (1934–1936). He continued to paint and exhibit before joining the Navy in World War II. After the war he set the Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge, the location of this painting, and then started the Worldwide Wildlife Fund in 1961. He was the first president of the Society of Wildlife Artists.
