This painting was purchased from the artist six months before his death. He had been especially fond of it and it hung in his bedroom. Matthew Smith had lived in France at intervals throughout his life and this model was Christiane de Maubeuge, whom he met when staying at her mother's hotel in Cagnes-sur-Mer, on the Côte d'Azur. Smith thought in colour, his voluptuous brushstrokes creating the form of the nudes, still lifes and Provençal landscapes which were his favourite subjects.
