The composition of the panel is divided into three sections by trees, which also form the forest background and frame the piece. The left-hand panel shows three figures in front of a temple or palace. On the left is Sita, the princess and wife of Rama. Rama is standing next to her on the right-hand side, and kneeling on the far right is Rama`s brother, Laksmana. A bird sits in the trees above. These three characters travel together into the wilderness when Rama is banished from his father's kingdom, due to a promise the king kept to Rama's stepmother. The panel on the left shows the demon Marica in the form of a deer. He lures Rama into the forest after he takes the fancy of Sita, Rama's wife. Rama is shown on the right-hand side of the panel in front of his brother, Laksmana.
