This painting was produced during the harsh winter of 1961 to 1962. During this time Newton lived with his wife Eleanor at Guildford, while his studies were interrupted by two years of National Service spent with the Royal Engineers at Aldershot. He originally went to paint swans on the river, but by the time he set up his equipment the swans had left. Instead, he painted the frozen river seen through the snow-covered railings, which reminded him of the spears in Velázquez's 'Surrender of Breda', (Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid). The resulting painting was exhibited under the title 'Winter at Guildford' at the Royal Academy in 1962. A visitor to the exhibition, Mrs Peggy Osborn, wrote to the artist: 'Last Tuesday I went to London from Birmingham to see the Royal Academy of Arts exhibition at Burlington House.
The painting caused a sensation at the Royal Academy and was purchased by Sir Gerald Kelly. Sir Henry Rushbury, Head of the Royal Academy Schools, was delighted and told Kelly that in his opinion Newton was 'one of the most gifted students that had been in the Academy School for years'.
