Anne (1665–1714) ascended the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1702. In 1707, under the Act of Union, England and Scotland were united as a single sovereign state, the Kingdom of Great Britain. Anne's Catholic father, James II and VII, was deposed during the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688. Her Protestant sister Mary and husband William III, became joint monarchs. After Mary's death in 1694, William continued as sole monarch until his own death and Anne's accession in 1702. Despite 17 pregnancies, Anne died without surviving children. The mural in the Chapel of the Royal Hospital Chelsea of the Resurrection by Sebastiano Ricci was commissioned by her and contains images of her children. Anne was the last monarch of the House of Stuart, succeeded by her second cousin George I of the House of Hanover, a descendant of the Stuarts through his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth, daughter of James VI and I.
