A carved head of a putto flanked by two bunches of grapes and grape leaves – one of sculptor William Bloye's most popular motifs, especially for public houses. Painted brightly in gold, red and green, the baroque styled surround provides a bold frame for the name and date in raised lettering. As the cartouche is carved in full relief, almost in the round, it expresses a sense of ripeness that is characteristic of Bacchus the god of wine. The brightly coloured relief contrasts with the red brick of the building, and echoes two small bunches of grapes situated lower on the facade.
