John Collier was born in 1708 in Urmston outside of Manchester. He became a travelling teacher. His travels took him throughout the Bolton, Oldham and Rochdale area, ending up in 1729 in Milnrow, part of Rochdale borough. John Collier changed his name and became better known as Tim Bobbin, and this eccentric character became famous for his satirical caricatures and his storytelling in the Lancashire dialect.
