The date on the frame of this portrait is 1730. There was no Provost Cuthbert serving in 1730 but ex-Provosts are given the courtesy title of Provost. The family of Cuthbert was one of the most powerful families in Inverness in its day and several Cuthberts served as Provost, often more than once, between 1556 and 1646. This painting could be of any one of them.
