Sir George Alberti (b.1937) was the British Government's National Clinical Director for Emergency Access, making controversial changes to emergency care in the UK which led to some hospitals losing their status as emergency care centres. Alberti studied medicine at Oxford University, and later became professor of chemical pathology and human metabolism, and professor of clinical biochemistry and metabolic medicine at the University of Southampton, and professor of medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the president of the Royal College of Physicians of London between 1997–2002, and is currently chair of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, since 2011. The portrait was painted by the celebrated portraitist June Mendoza in 2002.
