Allardyce Nicoll was a professor of Theatre History at the University of Birmingham. Dame Laura Knight became friends with him and his wife Josie through their mutual involvement with the Malvern Festival. Their house, Wind's Acre, was situated on the hill side to the west of the Herefordshire Beacon at Malvern and Laura came to use their garage-stable building as a studio.
