This portrait of Henry belonged to the Scots College in Rome. An inventory from 1920 tells of how the painting was one of the numerous artefacts from the Scots College being sold at a street auction in the late 1700s. The portrait was bought by an agent of the Bishops of Scotland in Rome and was eventually brought to Blairs College, where it has since remained.
This is a copy of a portrait in pastel executed in Rome c.1786, one autograph version being in the National Portrait Gallery.
