There are clues to this little dog’s identity in his portrait. His name is inscribed on the spine of the book, and that of his owner on the letter. The letter is addressed to Mrs Thellusson. This was Elizabeth, whose husband Peter Thellusson was the owner of Brodsworth Hall from 1885–1899. They were especially fond of their dogs, commissioning four paintings of them from the artist William Henry Hamilton Trood. Elizabeth says in her will that she would like these paintings to be considered heirlooms – and they still hang in the Morning Room at Brodsworth today, with other paintings of family dogs. Trood stayed at Brodsworth Hall to work on the paintings, signing the Billiard Room register in April 1897, the year of Prairie Prince’s portrait.
