This portrait has a prior connection with Leicester’s Abbey Pumping Station (now the technology museum) suggesting it may show a member of the local Gimson family, though no conclusion on this was reached in Art UK's Art Detective discussion of 2023. There was, however, an early and firm view that the artist is likely to be the Hungarian-born Arthur Pan (1894–1983).
