There were three Le Nain brothers living in France c.1588–1677. All were artists of varying skill but confusingly their works were only ever signed ‘Le Nain’ so knowing who painted which picture is very difficult. This portrait certainly has a debt to the Le Nain brothers, all three of whom painted portraits as well as genre paintings for which they are better known, and the work is generally believed to be by an artist in their circle.
