Voet was born in Antwerp, though he would ultimately die in Paris. In the late 1660s he was working in Rome and later Milan, chiefly as a portraitist, before moving to Paris to become court painter to Louis XIV. This portrait is fluidly and freely painted and bears characteristics of French seventeenth-century portraiture, however the virtuosity displayed in the detail on the brocaded coat of the young man attests to Voet's Flemish training. The stature of the sitter and his fashionable attire clearly demonstrate his wealth and status.
