Once thought to be Venetian, this painting was subsequently identified as French, with suggested attributions including that of Jean Raoux. The lady's costume, headdress and lace are datable to c.1710–1720. This painting is striking for its directness and informality and a convincing attribution to de Troy around 1710–1715 has recently been proposed.
