Linacre was the founder and first President of the College. He attended Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey. Linacre's aim was to create understanding and emulation among all physicians, to increase their inquiries into the nature of disease and secure more uniformity in treatment.

The painting was copied by Miller, the College Bedell (or Beadle), in 1810 from a painting at Windsor Castle (Royal Collection). The identification of the sitter in the Windsor painting has been disputed and it is now catalogued by the Royal Collection as 'Portrait of a Man, inscribed 1527, attributed to Quinten Massys'. It is not known on what grounds the Linacre identification was made and the sitter cannot be identified with any certainty.
