The painting was copied by Miller, the College Bedell (or Beadle), in 1810 from a painting at Windsor Castle (Royal Collection). The identification of the sitter in the Windsor painting has been disputed and it is now catalogued by the Royal Collection as 'Portrait of a Man, inscribed 1527, attributed to Quinten Massys'. It is not known on what grounds the Linacre identification was made and the sitter cannot be identified with any certainty.
