A project to celebrate the return of the A3 roads return to heathland and creation of a new tunnel, the name 'Portal' was derived after much consultation and deliberation. It was chosen to represent an elaborate door; the start of a journey; a direct reference to the tunnel ends ; a gateway to the landscape; an entrance point to a new phase; alluding to the channelling of creative exploration; an entrance point to the work, alluding to myth, memory and the mind.
