The Durham University coat of arms bearing the motto 'Mens Agitat Molem', with a putto at each side. At the second, street level, a bearded male figure representing Science, holds a book and is dressed in classical drapes; to the left, a female figure representing Art. Both are seated on abutments to the tower with a rounded cupola above each. Above these, at the third storey, is a relief carving of the Armstrong coat of arms with swags of fruit on either side.
