The bridge is named after Pero, a servant in the ownership of John Pinney, a Bristol merchant and plantation owner. The bridge is raised by a hydraulic ram and the horns of the counterweights are the most distinctive aspect of the sculptor’s design. The opposing curves of the footpath successfully suggest movement, and there is much thought and subtlety in the design of the supporting steelwork and railings.
