Interior scene depicting a group of peasants eating mussels. Three men are seated around a narrow wooden bench with a bowl of mussels and half a loaf of bread. The man sitting on the left reaches into a bowl of mussels while the man on the right breaks open a shell. The peasant in the centre handles his food whilst talking to a woman holding a serving bowl. On the ground before the peasants, a fourth man reaches into a small cauldron, with empty mussel shells scattered about the vessel. Three stoneware bottles are visible on the ground in the bottom right corner, and in the background a door is open, through which rural landscape can be seen.
