Six red sphinxes, arranged in pairs, flank the steps that connect the upper and lower terraces. Their bodies and bases are decorated with hieroglyphics. The design was based on the red granite Tanis sphinx in the Louvre, Paris. It is believed that there were 12 sphinxes when the Crystal Palace was relocated to Sydenham and reopened in 1854.
