The artist has aimed at a visual distillation of the three elements of sky, land and sea. This painting shows the influence of Zen Philosophy and the work of the Japanese artist Kenzo Okada, whom McKenzie Smith met in Paris in 1959. This painting was inspired by a painting holiday spent on Canna, an Island in the Inner Hebrides, in 1985 but the artist had also visited Canna in the 1960s and the Canna motif recurs in various paintings particularly in the 1980s.
