Historian of Florentine politics Nicolai Rubinstein (1911–2002) was probably the last surviving user of the Warburg library in Hamburg. Having fled Germany from in 1933, he arrived in England in 1939 and taught at Westfield College as lecturer, reader and finally professor from 1945 until his retirement in 1978. From 1949 onwards, he taught a weekly seminar at the University of London's Institute of Historical Research. He had close links with, and a room in, the Warburg Institute. A research fellowship has been founded there in his memory. The work is located at the Warburg Institute.
